The 3 Workwear Staples You Need In Your Closet

workwear staples you need in your closet

I want to share my top 3 workwear staples that you NEED to have in your closet. A workwear staple, in my opinion, is a piece you can wear throughout the year, in a variety of professional settings, in a multitude of different stylings. I love pairing these structured staples with more casual pieces to create a classy yet approachable workwear style.

1. Longline Blazer

A classic longline blazer can go a long way in your workwear rotation. I love the versatility of a good blazer and the longline style gives me even more options. It’s a twist on the traditional blazer, fits looser and longer on the body, and is suitable for a wider array of occasions. This may be slightly more than you would typically spend on a single garment, but please consider these investment pieces. You can pair a good black or tan longline blazer with almost any outfit to dress it up or add structure. Of course, you don’t have to stay with neutrals and solid colors when it comes to this workwear staple. A patterned, print, or textured fabric can also be worn a variety of ways. In fact, my favorite longline blazer is this plaid Rachel Roy Collection blazer. A few of my favorite ways to style these longline blazers are:

  • over a shift dress and gathered at the waist by a statement belt
  • thrown over a white tee and jeans for a business casual look
  • paired with a monochromatic outfit to add some visual interest

2. Statement Belt

A belt really completes the look of any work outfit. Not only does it keep your pants up, but worn correctly, can flatter your figure and accessorize your outfit. I tend to wear a lot of black/neutrals and accessorize with gold so my go-to is usually this classic, black leather Gucci belt. Again, another investment piece, but it is also the perfect entry-level piece to start a designer collection. All the flair of trendy designer pieces but with the practicality you would expect from a quality belt. I love a good “subtle flex” but this Lovestrength Astra belt makes a statement without the designer price tag.

3. Pointed-Toe Black Flats

I love pointed-toe flats to add some edge to any outfit and when combined with a classic color like black, these shoes become my most-worn footwear in my closet. 4/5 days of the work week, you will catch me wearing some variation of a black, pointed-toe flat. I love that they are neutral and can go with anything yet, they keep an outfit fresh by adding some textural and visual interest. My staple flats are a pair of d’Orsay Sam Edelman’s but these Valentino Rockstud flats are on my wish list because they are the ultimate crossover between fashion and function.

If you’re looking to build a versatile workwear collection or revamp with multifunctional staples, these are three of the key pieces you should start with. Hope this helps and my you continue to fabulous from Monday morning meetings to pre-weekend happy hours!
